With my own wedding to Whitney right around the corner, I definitely have weddings and honeymoons on my mind lately. 🤍 And while Arizona might not be the first place everyone thinks of when they hear “honeymoon,” there are so many incredible ways to plan a romantic getaway here.
You can spend a few days relaxing at a luxury resort, wake up surrounded by Sedona’s red rocks, go wine tasting, hike through the desert, book a spa day, or turn the whole trip into an Arizona road trip.
The Grand Canyon might get most of the attention, but there is so much more to an Arizona honeymoon.
This really depends on where you’re going because Arizona’s climate changes quite a bit across the state.
For Phoenix and Scottsdale, the cooler months are ideal for spending time outside. If Sedona or the Grand Canyon is on your itinerary, spring is another great option, while Flagstaff can be especially nice in the fall before winter arrives.
Overall, March through May and September through November are highlighted as some of the best months for Arizona honeymoon weather.
If your idea of a honeymoon involves a beautiful resort, a pool, spa treatments and plenty of time to relax, Arizona has some amazing options.
For a romantic Sedona escape, Ambiente offers an adults-only stay surrounded by the area’s iconic red rocks. Its glass-walled accommodations and private rooftop spaces make it an especially beautiful option for couples who want to enjoy sunsets, stargazing and the scenery right from their room.
For a relaxing Tucson getaway, Loews Ventana Canyon Resort offers two swimming pools, private balconies, restaurants and a spa, all surrounded by the desert landscape.
Royal Palms is made for a romantic desert escape. Think spa treatments, yoga, Mediterranean-inspired dining and private cabanas where you can spend the day doing absolutely nothing if that’s what your honeymoon calls for.
If I were putting together a romantic Arizona getaway list, Sedona would absolutely be on it.
At L’Auberge de Sedona, couples can stay in private cottages, spend the day exploring the surrounding red rocks and end the evening stargazing from their balcony.
For a luxury Scottsdale honeymoon, The Canyon Suites at The Phoenician offers beautiful rooms and suites along with resort experiences ranging from golf to spa treatments.
This is a great option if you want the resort itself to be a big part of the honeymoon experience.
Built into the Twin Buttes area, this resort is all about the views. You can spend the day exploring the Sonoran Desert and then head to Top of the Rock for dinner overlooking the surrounding landscape.
One of the best parts about honeymooning in Arizona is that you don’t necessarily have to choose just one destination.
Rent a car and you can turn your honeymoon into a road trip, combining resort days with hiking, sightseeing, small towns and some of Arizona’s most iconic landscapes.
If you want a combination of luxury resorts, restaurants, spas, golf and outdoor adventures, the Phoenix and Scottsdale area makes a great home base.
Spend a morning exploring the Desert Botanical Garden, hike Camelback Mountain, book a couples spa treatment and finish the day with dinner somewhere with a beautiful desert view.
For romance and scenery, Sedona is hard to beat.
Spend your days hiking through red-rock country, exploring the local arts scene, visiting the Verde Valley Wine Trail or booking a relaxing spa experience. It’s especially easy to build a honeymoon here that balances adventure with downtime.
Tucson is another great option if you want desert scenery and outdoor adventures.
You can hike through Sabino Canyon, explore Saguaro National Park or spend some time discovering the city itself.
Of course, you can’t talk about an Arizona honeymoon without mentioning the Grand Canyon.
Whether you spend a day hiking, go horseback riding or simply take in the views together, it’s an unforgettable addition to an Arizona road trip.
If you’re traveling between Sedona and the Grand Canyon, Flagstaff makes an easy addition to the itinerary.
You can visit Walnut Canyon National Monument, spend an evening at Lowell Observatory or explore Wupatki National Monument before continuing your road trip.
Arizona is incredibly easy to explore by car, and having one gives you much more freedom if you want to combine destinations like Scottsdale, Sedona, Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon.
A few things to keep in mind:
Arizona is one of those places where you can make your honeymoon exactly what you want it to be.
You can spend a few days being completely spoiled at a Scottsdale resort, escape to a cottage in Sedona, go hiking through the desert, sip wine in Verde Valley, stargaze in Northern Arizona, or turn the entire trip into one big road trip.
And with Whitney and me getting married soon, I’ve definitely been thinking a little more about what makes these trips so special. After all the planning that goes into a wedding, having somewhere beautiful to slow down, celebrate and just enjoy being newlyweds sounds pretty perfect to me.
