If you’re looking for a weekend getaway from the Valley, put Prescott on your list. Just a couple of hours from Phoenix, this mountain town offers cooler temperatures, historic charm, outdoor adventures, and plenty of places to explore.
Whether you’re visiting for the first time or looking for an excuse to go back, here are 5 Prescott stops worth adding to your itinerary.
If you want to experience Arizona’s Western heritage, start here. The Phippen Museum showcases Western art, history, and culture through rotating exhibits and permanent collections. It’s a great stop for anyone interested in the artists, ranchers, cowboys, and stories that helped shape the Southwest.
Prescott’s Courthouse Plaza is the heart of downtown and an easy place to spend a few hours wandering. Browse local boutiques, antique shops, galleries, restaurants, and cafés while taking in the historic architecture.
The plaza also hosts community events and seasonal celebrations throughout the year, making downtown feel different every time you visit.
No trip to Prescott is complete without experiencing Whiskey Row.
This historic stretch of Montezuma Street was once lined with saloons catering to miners, cowboys, and travelers. Today, it’s one of Prescott’s most recognizable destinations, filled with restaurants, bars, live music, and historic buildings.
Be sure to stop by The Palace Restaurant & Saloon, Arizona’s oldest frontier saloon, for a little taste of Prescott’s Old West history.
For one of the most scenic stops in Prescott, head to Watson Lake.
The lake is surrounded by the area's famous granite formations, creating a landscape that feels completely different from the desert scenery around Phoenix. You can spend the day kayaking, fishing, hiking, picnicking, or simply taking in the views.
It’s also a great spot to bring a camera because the granite dells make for some seriously beautiful Arizona scenery.
For a deeper look at Arizona’s history, add the Sharlot Hall Museum to your itinerary. The museum features historic buildings, artifacts, exhibits, and programs that bring Prescott’s past to life.
You can explore everything from a replica 1867 schoolhouse to the Territorial Governor’s Mansion and learn more about the people and events that shaped early Arizona.
One of my favorite things about Arizona is how much the landscape changes within just a few hours. Prescott gives you a completely different experience from the Valley, with pine trees, cooler mountain weather, historic neighborhoods, and a charming downtown all in one trip.
So if you’re ready for a little escape from the desert, save this list and make Prescott your next weekend adventure.
