Phoenix is once again a top destination for new residents, and the latest U-Haul data shows exactly where they're coming from.
With nearly half of all U.S. residential moves happening between Memorial Day and Labor Day, summer is peak moving season. And in 2025, metro Phoenix is still one of the hottest relocation spots in the country.
According to U-Haul’s midyear migration trends report, more people are heading into Phoenix than ever before — and they’re not just coming from nearby cities. The Valley is attracting movers from coast to coast, particularly from western states and major urban hubs.
U-Haul compiled data from one-way trips taken between January and July 2025 to see which cities and states were sending the most new residents to the Phoenix area.
These states led the way in one-way moves to Phoenix — excluding in-state relocations:
California
Texas
Colorado
Nevada
Washington
Utah
New Mexico
Oregon
Illinois
Florida
Not surprisingly, many of these places are grappling with higher costs of living, heavier traffic, or limited housing availability — making Phoenix a more affordable and appealing option.
Want to know where your new neighbors are moving from? These metro areas ranked highest in inbound moves to the Valley:
Los Angeles, CA
Las Vegas, NV
Denver, CO
Salt Lake City, UT
Seattle, WA
Even within the state, people are relocating to Phoenix in big numbers. The most common in-state origin cities include:
Tucson
Prescott
Flagstaff
Lake Havasu City
Yuma
These trends point to the Phoenix metro not just being a landing spot for out-of-state movers, but also for Arizonans looking for new opportunities or lifestyle changes.
Phoenix’s continued growth speaks volumes about how attractive the city has become for people seeking better affordability, weather, jobs, and lifestyle. But it also puts pressure on housing, infrastructure, and local resources — which makes tracking these trends essential for businesses, developers, and city leaders.
Whether you’re welcoming new neighbors or planning a move of your own, one thing is clear: Phoenix remains one of the most desirable places to live in the U.S. — and that doesn’t look like it’s changing anytime soon.
